The Night Senninichi Mairi: A Special Pilgrimage Where Visiting This Day Grants the Merit of One Thousand Days

About this spot

The Senninichi Mairi held at Kii Miiji Temple on August 9-10 each year is a special event where visiting grants the same spiritual merit as one thousand days of regular pilgrimage. In 2026, the Dragon Palace and Sea Princess procession ritual begins at 8 PM, with fortune stick tossing scheduled for 8:30 PM. The 231 stone steps you climbed during the day are illuminated by lanterns at night, revealing a completely different, fantastical appearance. The bustling temple grounds, crowded with pilgrims, represent one of Wakayama's iconic summer night scenes.
