About this spot

Spread across the Kannon-zaki area, this is an obsidian deposit designated as a national natural monument. Milky-white obsidian cliffs are exposed over a height of 40 meters and a width of 120 meters, and such an outcrop visible above ground is considered rare even nationwide. It's the only obsidian source in the Seto Inland Sea, and obsidian from Himeshima has been found at archaeological sites across a wide area stretching from Tanegashima to Osaka. The landscape, which tells the story of how the island was formed, is also a great starting point for children's independent research projects.

Tips

Taking stones home may not be allowed, so check the rules before you go. The ground is rocky and can be hard to walk on in places, so wearing comfortable walking shoes is recommended.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. The obsidian shines especially well in the afternoon sunlight.
