This summer festival takes place around Hamawaki Onsen (浜脇温泉), said to be one of the birthplaces of Beppu hot springs, on Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30, 2026. Food stalls line the area around the venue, and people in yukata stroll through the lantern-lit hot spring town, a quintessential summer scene of Beppu's hot spring culture. The hilly alleys of Hamawaki take on a different character than during the day, wrapped in a distinctive atmosphere where hot spring steam mingles with festival music. On the first day, the 29th, events such as a Buddhist memorial service for the Hamawaki Yakushi Nyorai statue, Yakushi offerings, and an oiran (courtesan) procession take place, and the festival's manageable scale makes it easy for families with children to enjoy.

Tips

The area around the venue has narrow, hilly streets, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Sea breezes cool things down at night, so a light layer is reassuring to bring. If you want to avoid the crowds at the food stalls, the time right after the festival starts is recommended.

Best time to visit

Right after the start around 16:00 is relatively calm, and once the sun sets, the lantern light really stands out.
