About this spot

A keyhole-shaped burial mound built in the early 5th century, located in Tezukayama-nishi, Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka. One of only three burial mounds remaining within the city, it is said to be the only one in Osaka retaining the original keyhole shape, and is traditionally believed to be the tomb of Otomo no Kanamura, a powerful clan leader who served the Yamato court. The sight of an ancient mound preserved amid a quiet residential neighborhood is unique, and it is a good place to learn about the land's history before visiting Sumiyoshi Taisha. The Hankai Tramway (阪堺電車) crossing through the town nearby also adds to the nostalgic atmosphere.

Tips

Accessible from Nagai Park via the Hankai Tramway. The area around Sumiyoshi Taisha gets crowded on the day of the summer festival, so having lunch at the nearby Tezukayama shopping street around this time will make your afternoon go more smoothly.
