Japan's oldest-class shrine enshrining Mount Miwa as its deity
About this spot
A shrine enshrining Mount Miwa itself as the deity, counted among Japan's oldest. It has no main hall, instead preserving the ancient "primordial Shinto" practice of worshiping the mountain directly, with a massive torii gate and a solemn prayer hall lining the grounds. Tsunakoshi Shrine, where the festival takes place, is a minor shrine located near the first torii gate of Oomiwa Shrine, serving as a "purification shrine" (haraedo-sha) where worshippers first cleanse themselves before the main visit.
