About this spot

A shrine associated with Omiwa Shrine, located west of JR Miwa Station. The enshrined deity, Yaeguotoshinushi-no-mikoto, is the child deity of Omononushi-no-Okami, the principal deity of Omiwa Shrine. According to shrine tradition, Tsubaichi, said to be Japan's first open-air market, moved to this area of Miwa after the Hase River flooded in 926 AD. The February Hatsu-Ebisu event is known as the Miwa no Hatsu-ichi, or Miwa's first market, and draws lively crowds. During your summer visit, you can take a break here and enjoy the atmosphere of Miwa's temple town.

Tips

Within walking distance of the approach path to Omiwa Shrine. After your visit, have lunch at one of the nearby restaurants serving Miwa somen. Lunchtime can get crowded, so eating a little earlier will make your afternoon smoother.
