An ancient temple associated with Ganjin Wajo, with a serene Golden Hall

About this spot

Founded in 759 by Ganjin Wajo, who came from Tang after facing many hardships, this is the head temple of the Ritsu sect. The Golden Hall, which preserves the architectural style of the Tenpyo era, impresses with its majestic appearance with thick columns standing in order and is designated as a National Treasure. The temple grounds also include the mausoleum of Ganjin Wajo, and simply walking through the quiet, green gardens allows you to spend a solemn time truly characteristic of Nara as an ancient capital.

平城宮跡歴史公園の正門にあたる朱雀門を背景に、2026年8月22日(土)・23日(日)の2日間にわたって開催される夏祭りです。会場には出店が並び、奈良時代の都の玄関口だった朱雀門の壮大な姿がライトアップされる中、家族連れでにぎわいます。古代の都の跡地というスケールの大きな舞台で楽しむ夏祭りは、奈良ならではの特別な体験です。

Tips

会場は広大な広場のため、レジャーシートがあると快適です。日陰が少ないので、日中の暑さが残る時間帯は飲み物を多めに。周辺道路の駐車場は限られるため、公共交通機関の利用がおすすめです。

Tips

Within walking distance of Yakushi-ji Temple. Admission fee required. The grounds have plenty of greenery and relatively pleasant shaded areas even in summer.
