Enormous Tanabata Decorations Swaying: The Finale of a Major Northeast Festival
About this spot
One of the three major festivals of Northeast Japan that colors Sendai's summer, running August 6-8, 2026. Centered on the commercial arcade streets of the city center, enormous tanabata decorations adorned with colorful washi paper and streamers hang high overhead, and simply walking through the streets lets you experience the festival's brilliance. Combining traditions that continue from the Edo period with modern decoration, Sendai Tanabata creates a unique sight staged throughout Sendai's central business district. From opening day, crowds flow in, and once the lights illuminate the decorations at night, an enchanting atmosphere replaces the daytime scene.

Name: 仙台七夕まつり
Date & time: 8/6 (Thu)–8/8 (Sat) Time TBA

Tips
Opening day and weekends are extremely crowded, so if using a stroller, choose less-busy streets for peace of mind. The arcade is roofed, so light rain won't spoil the fun, but humid air can accumulate, so bring extra drinking water. Traffic restrictions may be in place around the area, so public transportation is recommended.
Best time to visit
Around 5 PM, the decorations come alive in full force. From 6 PM onward when lights illuminate the displays, you can enjoy an enchanting atmosphere quite different from daytime.
