Viewing the Full-Scale Reconstruction of the Keicho Mission Ship
About this spot
A museum centered around the full-scale reconstruction of the San Juan Bautista, the ship that sailed to Europe in the early Edo period at the command of Date Masamune, the Keicho Mission. Inside the museum, the history of the voyage and the footprints of the mission and Tsunenaga Hasekura are presented in an easy-to-understand manner. Visitors can climb onto the deck of the large sailing ship and experience the scale of the historical voyage. Located by the sea, the museum also offers views of Ishinomaki Bay, allowing visitors to sense both history and the marine environment.

北上川の水運とともに発展してきた石巻の歴史に感謝する、100年以上続く夏祭りです。2026年は7月31日から8月2日までの3日間にわたって開催され、開北橋下流の川筋一帯が会場となります。日中は市中パレードや太鼓の演舞などでにぎわい、日が暮れると北上川の川面を彩る花火大会がクライマックスを迎えます。北上川と海の恵みに支えられてきた石巻の人々の思いが込められた、地域を挙げての夏祭りです。
Tips
花火観覧には河川敷や堤防沿いの場所取りが人気なので、早めの到着がおすすめです。会場周辺は大規模な交通規制がかかるため、徒歩や公共交通機関での来場が確実です。夜は川沿いで気温が下がることもあるので、薄手の羽織ものがあると安心です。
Tips
From Hiwayama Park, car or bus transport is convenient. The ship's interior has stairs, so be careful of handrails if traveling with small children. In summer, the outdoor deck portion can get very hot, so it's advisable to bring a hat and drinking water.
Best time to visit
Approximately 55 minutes. Early afternoon is relatively uncrowded and allows for leisurely viewing.
