About this spot

This museum centers on a full-size replica of the San Juan Bautista (サン・ファン・バウティスタ号), the Keicho Embassy ship that sailed to Europe in the early Edo period on the orders of Date Masamune. Inside, exhibits clearly introduce the history of the voyage and the journey of envoy Hasekura Tsunenaga, and you can climb onto the deck of the large sailing ship to feel the scale of the voyage firsthand. Standing by the sea, the museum also offers views of Ishinomaki Bay, making it a spot where you can experience both history and the ocean.

Tips

Traveling by car or bus from Hiyoriyama Park is convenient. There are stairs aboard the ship, so families with small children should be careful with the handrails. The outdoor deck area gets hot in summer, so bring a hat and something to drink.

Best time to visit

About 55 minutes. Early afternoon tends to be relatively uncrowded, allowing for a leisurely visit.
