This plaza was built in Kokumachi (穀町), right in front of JR Ishinomaki Station. Completed in 2020 as part of the tsunami reconstruction project for the area around Ishinomaki Station, it has an open space along the rail line with a covered shelter and benches with tables where you can sit and rest. In times of disaster, it also serves as a place to distribute food and relief supplies to evacuees. It's within walking distance of the Kawabiraki Festival venue, making it a perfect spot for a break after an early dinner and before heading to the festival. As evening falls, more and more families in yukata gather in front of the station, and the festival atmosphere gradually builds.
Tips
Restaurants around the station get crowded in the evening on festival days, so it's a good idea to have dinner early, sometime between 3pm and 5pm. Traffic restrictions are in place around the venue, so it's smoothest to finish your meal and rest near the station before walking over.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. A good time for a break after dinner and before heading to the festival venue.
