Next stop: Ogatsu's seaside summer festival at a roadside station lined with food stallsAbout this spot
This facility introduces the traditional craft behind Ogatsu inkstones (雄勝硯), which are said to account for the majority of Japan's total production. Panels and displays clearly explain the process and history of making inkstones from high-quality gensho stone, and you may also be able to watch artisans at work. It's a perfect stop along your walk to get a feel for the depth of Ogatsu's local industry, and since it's right next to the Michi-no-Eki Suzuri-jo no Sato Ogatsu roadside station, moving on to the festival venue is easy.
Tips
The hall is mainly exhibits, so comfortable walking clothes are fine. Inkstone products are also sold as souvenirs.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. In the late afternoon, you can cool off and look around in the air-conditioned hall.
