Etchu Yatsuo's representative festival, said to have over 300 years of history, held September 1-3, 2026. Centered on Suwa-cho Main Street with its stone-paved slopes, dancers wearing decorated hats dance gracefully while processions move to the melancholic melodies of shamisen and erhu. The traditional townscape of the sloped town illuminated by paper lanterns, interwoven with elegant dancing, creates a fantastical atmosphere rich in Japanese aesthetics. The dances and songs passed down by each town district resound through the sloped town from the festival's opening night late into the evening.

The venue is very crowded during the festival period. If you want a good viewing spot, arrive early at the roadside. There are many slopes, so if using a stroller, choose a walking-friendly route. At night, temperatures drop due to the town being nestled in the mountains, so bringing a light jacket is recommended for comfort.

Best time to visit

Town processions begin around 5 PM, with the most atmospheric time being after 6 PM when the paper lanterns are lit.
