About this spot

This townscape is lined with sturdy dozo-zukuri (storehouse-style) merchant houses, rebuilt for fire prevention following a great fire in 1900 (Meiji 33). Designated a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, the imposing buildings that speak of the era's prosperity are still in use as active shops today. The thick walls unique to dozo-zukuri construction block out the summer sun, so even just walking the street feels pleasantly cool. It's a corner of town where you can feel firsthand the history of Takaoka's prosperity as a merchant city.

Tips

Within walking distance of Zuiryuji Temple, it's easy to stop by during your stroll. Some buildings also allow interior viewing, so it's worth enjoying the design inside as well as the exteriors.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. The soft afternoon light beautifully illuminates the storehouse walls.
