National Important Preservation District with Massive Kura-zukuri Merchant Houses

Following the great fire of Meiji 33, this street was rebuilt with heavy kura-zukuri (earthen-walled) merchant houses for fire prevention. Designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings, these substantial buildings with their distinctive architectural style from that era continue to operate as shops today, telling the story of Takaoka's former prosperity. The thick walls characteristic of kura-zukuri block out summer sunlight, and simply walking down this street allows you to feel the cool air. This is a place where you can physically experience the history of Takaoka's prosperity as a commercial city.

2026年8月16日、高岡市を流れる千保川の河川敷で行われる灯籠流し祭は、お盆に帰ってきたご先祖の霊を、灯籠の灯りとともに静かに見送る伝統行事です。日が暮れると、家族の名前や願いごとが書かれた無数の灯籠が川面へと放たれ、ゆらゆらと灯りを揺らしながら下流へと流れていきます。花火や太鼓とはまた違う、静かで厳かな雰囲気が漂う祭りで、夏の終わりをしみじみと感じさせてくれます。夜の川面いっぱいに広がる灯りの帯は、高岡の夏の締めくくりにふさわしい光景です。
Tips
河川敷は夜になると足元が暗くなるため、懐中電灯やスマートフォンのライトを持参すると安心です。虫が多い時期でもあるので、虫よけ対策をしっかりしておきましょう。灯籠を流したい場合は、会場で受付方法を確認してください。
Tips
It's within walking distance of Zuiryu Temple and convenient to visit during your stroll. Some buildings allow interior viewing, so it's recommended to enjoy not just the exterior but also the interior architecture.
