About this spot

This is the birthplace of Takaoka's cast-metal industry, which began about 400 years ago when Maeda Toshinaga, lord of the Kaga domain, invited casters to settle here. Rows of townhouses feature senbon-goshi (fine wooden lattice fronts), and the streets are paved with stone, letting you feel the weight of history as a casting town just by walking through. Workshops are still scattered around, and browsing shops selling cast-metal products like wind chimes and ornaments is an enjoyable way to spend time. As evening approaches, this is a corner of town where you can slowly savor the origins of Takaoka's artisan culture.

Tips

Within walking distance of Yamacho-suji. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for the stone-paved streets. Some workshops offer tours or hands-on experiences, so if you have time to spare, drop by.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes. The slanting light near evening beautifully brings out the shadows of the lattice doors.
