National Treasure Zen Temple with Gate, Buddha Hall, and Lecture Hall in a Line

About this spot

A renowned Soto Zen temple built by Maeda Toshinasu, the 3rd lord of Kaga Domain, to honor the memory of Maeda Toshinaga, the 2nd lord. The arrangement of the gate, Buddha hall, and lecture hall in a straight line is considered a typical example of Zen temple architecture and all three are designated as national treasures. The spacious front courtyard surrounded by covered corridors is filled with serenity, and even in midsummer, the shade beneath the trees offers refreshment. It's a fitting place to visit before the Lantern Floating Festival, where an air of prayer flows throughout.

Name:

Date & time: 8/16 (Sun) Time TBA

Venue:

Tips

Tips

About 15 minutes on foot from Takaoka Station. An admission fee is required, and you can also pay respects to the memorial tablet of Maeda Toshinaga inside the Buddha hall. The interior of the halls is relatively cool in summer, making it an ideal rest spot during outdoor walks.

Best time to visit

Takes about 55 minutes. The white-walled temple buildings look particularly beautiful in the afternoon light.
