Castle Town with White Walls and Black Wooden Fences—The Streets Walked by Late Edo Period Visionaries
About this spot
Centered on the Kikuya residence, which served as an official merchant to the Hagi Domain, this area vividly preserves the atmosphere of the castle town with its white walls and black fences lining Edo-ya Yokocho and Ise-ya Yokocho alleyways. The Kikuya residence is designated as a National Important Cultural Property and features spacious tatami rooms and gardens showcasing the lifestyle of wealthy merchants. The summer orange trees visible over the fences are a seasonal characteristic of Hagi, and walking the small streets once traveled by late Edo period visionaries seems to bring the era to life. The entire castle town is designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings.
