The Grand Summer Festival of Sugawara no Michizane's Birthday at Japan's First Tenmangu Shrine
About this spot
Running from August 3-5, 2026, the Gotanshinsai celebrates the birthday of Sugawara no Michizane (菅原道真), the Kami of learning, and is Hofu Tenmangu's signature summer festival. As Japan's first Tenmangu shrine, the festival embodies historic dignity. During the celebration, the grounds are illuminated with countless lanterns, and crowds of worshippers continue throughout the evening. The sight of the vermillion shrine buildings silhouetted against the night sky, backed by Kuwayama, has become an iconic image of Hofu's summer. The opening night of this festival, which you'll experience on this course, brims with the excitement of a newly begun celebration.
