The Matsuzaki-cho area along the main approach to Hofu Tenmangu features local restaurants and souvenir shops beloved by residents. Having an early dinner here before entering the festival grounds allows you to enjoy the evening worship at leisure. As evening approaches, increasing numbers of festival-bound worshippers walk the approach, and a festive atmosphere permeates the entire street as the great summer festival draws near.
Tips
From late afternoon onward, the shrine area becomes crowded, so dining by around 4 PM allows you to move at ease. The approach is a gentle uphill slope, making comfortable walking shoes advisable.
Best time to visit
About 40 minutes. Early evening (before 5 PM) shops are relatively uncrowded.
