A prominent Zen temple in Chofu, this temple is distinguished by its Buddha Hall (Butsuden), built in the late Kamakura period and designated as a National Treasure. In the late Edo period, Takasugi Shinsaku used this as the site to launch his uprising, marking a pivotal moment in Japanese history leading to the Meiji Restoration. 2026年8月7日から13日までの7日間、長府の忌宮神社を舞台に開催される数方庭祭は、仲哀天皇の時代にまで由来が遡るとも伝わる、1800年以上の歴史を持つ夏の大祭です。天を突くほど高く笹竹や造花で飾られた「笹竹」を若者たちが頭上に掲げ、「切りひょうたん」の掛け声とともに境内を練り歩く姿は勇壮そのもの。夜が更けるにつれて境内は多くの見物客で埋め尽くされ、幾本もの高い笹竹が夜空に揺れる光景は、他の地域では見られない下関ならではの迫力あるまつりです。
Tips
会場周辺は夜になると多くの見物客でにぎわい、駐車場が早い時間に満車になることがあります。境内は人が密集するため、小さな子ども連れは無理に前方へ行かず、少し離れた場所から見守るのも安心です。

Accessible by foot or car from central Chofu. An admission fee applies. The temple grounds have abundant shade, making it relatively cool even during summer sightseeing.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes. Early afternoon is the quietest time for sightseeing.
