About this spot

A prominent Zen temple in Chofu, this temple is distinguished by its Buddha Hall (Butsuden), built in the late Kamakura period and designated as a National Treasure. The beautiful curved roof showcasing Zen architectural style is truly impressive. In the late Edo period, Takasugi Shinsaku used this as the site to launch his uprising, marking a pivotal moment in Japanese history leading to the Meiji Restoration. The serene, verdant temple grounds create a peaceful atmosphere, perfect as the starting point for exploring the castle town.

Tips

Accessible by foot or car from central Chofu. An admission fee applies. The temple grounds have abundant shade, making it relatively cool even during summer sightseeing.

Best time to visit

Approximately 50 minutes. Early afternoon is the quietest time for sightseeing.
