Held from 16:30 to 21:00 on August 13, 2026, the Yanai Goldfish Lantern Festival takes place across the white-walled townscape, a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and the Reitoro-dori area. The sight of kingyo-chochin, a traditional Yanai craft, hung from eave after eave and glowing softly as evening falls is full of a quiet, fantastical beauty quite different from summer festivals centered on taiko drumming and dancing. The night view woven by the white-walled storehouses and the red-and-white goldfish lanterns is a summer tradition well worth seeing if you visit Yanai.

Since the event runs only from 16:30 to 21:00, it's recommended to arrive at the venue with time to spare. The white-walled streets narrow in places and get crowded from evening onward, so hold hands with small children as you walk.

Best time to visit

The 16:30 hour right after lighting and the time after 18:00, once it's dark, each offer a different atmosphere to enjoy.
