A brick former prefectural government building and assembly hall evoking Taisho romance
About this spot
A cultural facility that restored and repurposed the former Yamagata Prefectural Government Building and Assembly Hall, built in Taisho 5 (1916), and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. With a red roof and brick facade based on Renaissance style, it evokes Taisho-era charm, and you can tour the assembly hall and governor's office inside. As a valuable piece of modern architecture that can be viewed free of charge, it is an essential spot in Yamagata's historical exploration.

2026年の山形花笠まつりは8月5日から7日までの3日間、山形市中心市街地の直線コースを舞台に開催される、東北四大祭りのひとつです。山形の特産品である紅花をあしらった花笠を手にした踊り手たちが、「ヤッショ、マカショ」の軽快な掛け声にあわせて笠を回しながら練り歩く姿は圧巻。1万人ともいわれる踊り手による大群舞が繰り出す熱気は、沿道の観客をも巻き込みます。今回のコースで訪ねる初日は、まつりが幕を開けたばかりの高揚感を味わえる日でもあります。
Tips
会場周辺は夕方以降、車両の通行規制がかかり大変混雑します。よい場所で観たいなら早めに沿道へ向かうのがおすすめです。飲み物をこまめに補給し、こまめな休憩を心がけましょう。
Tips
Within walking distance from Kasujou Park. Admission is free, and volunteer guides are often on-site. In summer, the building is cool, making it ideal for a visit that doubles as a rest stop.
