A lush green park spreading across the ruins of Yamagata Castle built by Mogami Yoshimitsu
About this spot
A green space symbolizing Yamagata City, this park was developed on the site of Yamagata Castle, which was built by Mogami Yoshimitsu at the height of the Mogami clan. Restored buildings including the Nino-no-maru Higashi Oote Gate and the water-filled moat convey the grandeur of the castle complex. Museums and art museums are scattered throughout the gardens, and tree-shaded walking paths provide relief from the summer sun. Close to Yamagata Station, it is an ideal starting point for exploring the town.

2026年の山形花笠まつりは8月5日から7日までの3日間、山形市中心市街地の直線コースを舞台に開催される、東北四大祭りのひとつです。山形の特産品である紅花をあしらった花笠を手にした踊り手たちが、「ヤッショ、マカショ」の軽快な掛け声にあわせて笠を回しながら練り歩く姿は圧巻。1万人ともいわれる踊り手による大群舞が繰り出す熱気は、沿道の観客をも巻き込みます。今回のコースで訪ねる初日は、まつりが幕を開けたばかりの高揚感を味わえる日でもあります。
Tips
会場周辺は夕方以降、車両の通行規制がかかり大変混雑します。よい場所で観たいなら早めに沿道へ向かうのがおすすめです。飲み物をこまめに補給し、こまめな休憩を心がけましょう。
Tips
About 10 minutes on foot from Yamagata Station. The park is spacious, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. In summer, shaded paths keep you cool.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes. Early afternoon allows for relatively quiet strolling.
