The fire festival where great torches light up one by one—marking the end of Mt. Fuji's climbing season

Counted as one of Japan's Three Strange Festivals, this festival centered at Kitaguchi Hongu Sengen Shrine marks the end of Mt. Fuji's climbing season. As evening approaches, following the portable shrine procession, great torches about 3 meters high set along the streets of Kamiyoshida, along with cross-stacked torches piled in front of homes, are lit one by one. As the night deepens, glowing red flames fill the streets, creating a fantastical scene announcing the end of summer and the conclusion of Mt. Fuji's climbing season.

Tips

The roadsides become crowded with spectators, so head there early if you want a good viewing spot. You'll walk near flames, so flame-resistant clothing is recommended. Using a stroller during crowding can be difficult, so a baby carrier is also recommended. Check official information regarding whether the festival proceeds in bad weather.

Best time to visit

Torches begin lighting around 5:00 PM. After 7 PM when it's completely dark, the most impressive flame display is visible.
