About this spot

A park developed on the grounds of Morioka Castle, the former residence of the Nanbu clan lords. Although the castle tower no longer stands, the magnificent stone walls from that era still remain, quietly standing at the center of the city. The park is also known for its cherry blossoms and autumn colors, and in summer offers pleasant shade from the trees as a gathering place for locals. Walking along the stone walls while listening to the murmur of the Nakatsu River allows you to feel the history of Morioka's flourishing as a castle town. With many benches, it's also an ideal place to rest before the parade.

盛岡さんさ踊りは、鬼退治にちなむ言い伝えを起源に持つ東北屈指の夏祭りで、2026年は8月1日から4日までの4日間、中央通・岩手県庁前を中心とした演舞コースで開催されます。太鼓の一斉演奏数で世界一を記録しギネス世界記録に認定されたこともある祭りで、初日18時、次々と登場する団体が太鼓を打ち鳴らしながら「サッコラ、チャグチャグ」の掛け声で乱舞します。浴衣姿の踊り手たちが編み出す隊列の美しさと、地響きのような太鼓の音圧は、東北の夏祭りの中でも屈指の迫力。子どもたちが参加する団体も多く、家族で楽しめる開放的な雰囲気が魅力です。

Tips

演舞コース沿いは開始前から観覧客で混み合うため、よい場所で見たい場合は17時台からの場所取りが安心です。周辺は交通規制がかかるので、公共交通機関の利用がおすすめ。荒天時の開催可否は主催者の発表を確認してください。

Tips

About 10 minutes by bus from Morioka Station, or within walking distance. The park has slopes, so comfortable shoes are recommended. In summer, walking in shaded areas is more comfortable.
