A striking stone structure in Western Gothic style that suddenly appears amid Tonomachi Street's white-walled townscape. The spired exterior harmonizes beautifully with the castle town's traditional aesthetic, but the sanctuary's greatest distinction is its tatami-matted interior—unique throughout Japan. Rather than pews, the space features tatami mats where worshippers kneel to pray, creating a distinctly East-West fusion sanctuary. The sight of multicolored light from stained glass falling upon tatami evokes quiet emotion. This church bears witness to the tragic history of Christians transported from Nagasaki during the late Edo and early Meiji periods who were martyred at nearby Otome Pass. An adjoining exhibition room preserves this historical memory. This viewing spot reveals another facet of castle town Tsuwano.
