A shrine venerated as the guardian deity of the entire Tsuwano Domain, its grounds still preserve yabusame (horseback archery) grounds said to reflect Japan's oldest style. Every spring, a rousing yabusame ritual is held here, making it a precious place that still conveys Tsuwano's samurai culture today. Surrounded by cedar groves, the grounds are quiet, with cool air lingering even in summer.
Tips
About a 10-minute drive from the ruins of Tsuwano Castle (津和野城跡). Since the grounds are surrounded by nature, insect repellent is reassuring to have on hand.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes needed. The cool hours of early afternoon are well suited for a visit.
