Experience authentic Awa Odori with 400 years of history, where dance groups dance the night away

The birthplace of Awa Odori, one of Japan's representative bon dances with over 400 years of history, held in Tokushima City. In 2026, it runs for 5 days from August 11-15, with performances at 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at venues throughout the city including the Aibahama Performance Stage, where dance groups from throughout the prefecture and beyond showcase their performances. Riding the rhythm of gongs, shamisen, drums, and flutes called "Zomeki," the powerful male dancers, graceful female dancers, and energetic children's groups pass before your eyes, naturally drawing viewers into the dance world. Living up to the chant "Fools who dance and fools who watch—if we're all fools anyway, dance and don't miss out!"—the entire city becomes one on this special night.

Ticketed performance venues offer reserved seating. Free venues and street corners provide standing room; early arrival is necessary for good spots. Extensive traffic restrictions are in place; public transportation is recommended.

Best time to visit

From 6 p.m. onwards. From 7 p.m. when sunset comes and lanterns light up is the most energetic time.
