Strolling through the rare two-tier udatsu townscape found nowhere else in Japan

In Sadamitsu, which prospered from indigo and tobacco trade, merchant houses with a rare style called 'two-tier udatsu,' where fireproof decoration walls are stacked in two stages, still line the streets. This style is said to be found only in Tsurugi Town nationwide, reflecting the financial power and aesthetic sensibility of the merchants of the time. The beautiful contrast between white walls and black-tiled roofs makes this townscape a popular spot for photography enthusiasts.

Venue: つるぎ町・貞光中央商店街、旧永井家庄屋屋敷
剣山の麓に広がるつるぎ町貞光地区で、町を挙げて開催される阿波踊り大会です。会場となる貞光中央商店街と旧永井家庄屋屋敷の周辺には、8月15日・16日の2日間、19時から21時半にかけて地元の連が集まり、鉦と太鼓のお囃子に合わせて踊りを披露します。昼間見学した歴史ある屋敷や二層うだつの町並みを背景に踊りが繰り広げられる光景は、この町ならではの情緒あふれる雰囲気です。都市部の大規模な阿波踊りとは違い、地域の人々との距離が近いアットホームな祭りを楽しめます。

会場周辺は当日交通規制がかかることがあります。夜間は町並みの奥まで街灯が少ない箇所もあるので、懐中電灯があると安心です。荒天時の開催可否は最新の案内で確認しましょう。
Tips
About 10 minutes' walk from JR Sadamitsu Station. In summer, there are few shaded areas on some streets, so take regular breaks. Part of the townscape is still used as residences and shops, so please view quietly.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. Soft morning to midday light beautifully illuminates the white walls.
