Visit the Ancient Shrine Known for the Tsushima Tenno Festival, One of Japan's Three Major River Festivals

The head shrine of approximately 3,000 Tsushima Shrines nationwide, widely known for the Tsushima Tenno Festival, counted as one of Japan's three major river festivals. The impressive vermilion-painted main hall and verdant precincts have long been cherished as the spiritual center of the local community. Many festivals in the Kiso Three Rivers basin are connected to the same Gozu Tenno faith as Tsushima Shrine, and the Sunaoshi Festival we will visit later is one of them. First, pray at this place, which can be said to be the source of the festival culture of this region, for the safe completion of today's journey.

冨吉建速神社と八剱社の祭礼として400年以上続く須成祭は、国の重要無形民俗文化財にも指定されている由緒ある夏祭りです。2026年は8月1日(土)・2日(日)の開催で、その初日を訪れます。夜になると提灯で飾られた車楽船が蟹江川をゆっくりと進み、川面に映る無数の灯りが幻想的な景色をつくり出します。木曽三川流域の水郷ならではの祭りの形を、家族でじっくりと眺めることができる貴重な機会です。屋台の有無は年によって異なるため、この日は事前に済ませた夕食を思い出しながら、静かに川祭りの雰囲気を味わうのがおすすめです。

Tips

川沿いの見物スペースは限られるため、早めの場所取りが安心です。夜は足元が暗くなるため、懐中電灯やスマートフォンのライトがあると安心です。周辺は交通規制がかかることがあるため、公共交通機関や徒歩でのアクセスがおすすめです。

Tips

The precincts are spacious and worth seeing, so it is recommended to visit with plenty of time to spare. In summer, there are limited shaded areas, so remember to stay hydrated. If you wish to collect a commemorative stamp (goshuin), it is recommended to check the office hours at the shrine office beforehand.
