About this spot

This is the head shrine of about 3,000 Tsushima shrines nationwide, and an ancient shrine widely known for the Tsushima Tenno Festival, counted as one of Japan's three great river festivals. Its impressive vermilion-lacquered main hall and lush green grounds have long been beloved as a center of faith for the local community. Many festivals connected to the same Gozu Tenno faith as Tsushima Shrine are handed down throughout the Kiso Three Rivers basin, and the Suenari Festival you'll visit later is one of them. Start by visiting this place, which could be called the wellspring of the region's festival culture, and pray for a safe day ahead.

Tips

The grounds are spacious and well worth exploring, so it is a good idea to visit with plenty of time to spare. Shaded areas are limited in summer, so do not forget to stay hydrated. If you would like a goshuin (shrine seal), it is reassuring to check the reception hours at the shrine office in advance.
