Next stop: Giant lanterns over 10 meters tall rising against the night sky, a nationally rare lantern festivalAbout this spot
This street stretches in front of Mikawa Isshiki Suwa Shrine. As the main festival draws near, people gradually start to gather in the area, and a sense of anticipation for the evening builds. Having an early dinner at a local shop lets you spend the time until the giant lanterns are lit calmly and without rushing. Enjoy this time before the festival amid the laid-back atmosphere typical of a port town.
Tips
The area gets crowded from the evening onward on the day of the festival, so an early dinner is recommended. Traffic restrictions may be in effect nearby, so if you are coming by car, checking parking locations in advance is reassuring. Many shops mainly accept cash, so it is a good idea to have small change ready.
Best time to visit
About 25 minutes. Finishing up before 5:00 p.m. lets you join the main festival smoothly.
