A Zen temple associated with Uesugi Kenshin, where he spent his childhood
About this spot
A Zen temple founded as the family temple of the Nagao clan, regional governors of Echigo. The young Uesugi Kenshin (then called Torachiyo) was entrusted here at age seven to study academics and Zen Buddhism. The cedar-lined approach path leading through the main gate conveys the weight of history, and burial sites of the Uesugi and Nagao families remain on the grounds. The treasure hall displays ancient documents and materials related to Kenshin, inviting you to imagine the young warrior as you walk. A precious opportunity to quietly reflect on history amid your castle ruins tour.
