About this spot

Karasaki Shrine, a sessha (auxiliary shrine) of Hiyoshi Taisha, is also known as the stage for the Omi Eight Scenic Views, specifically 'Rain at Karasaki,' and is famous for the massive Karasaki pine standing on the lake shore. The Mitarashi Festival, held annually on July 28, is a summer purification ritual where people float human-shaped paper cutouts (hitogata) on the lake to transfer impurities and pray for good health and family safety. The quiet and deeply moving summer festival continues to embody the faith of the Omi people who have lived with Lake Biwa's waters.
