About this spot

A rare natural phenomenon spot where countless hexagonal rocks, formed as cooling lava solidified, spread across the shore like tatami mats laid out side by side. At low tide, you can walk out onto the rocks to observe them up close; their regular geometric pattern is designated a National Natural Monument as a work of natural artistry. It's easy to visit alongside other northern Kumejima sights such as Miifuga.

Tips

The appearance changes greatly with the tides, so it's a good idea to check the low-tide time in advance. The rocks can be slippery, so shoes you can walk in easily are safer than sandals.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes. Low tide is when you can observe the widest expanse of rock surface.
