About this spot

This is a bold traditional event, long passed down in Hino Town, in which lit torches made of hemp stalks are swung around. In 2026 it will be held over two days, August 14 and 15; on the first day, the 14th, a torch procession departs from Gosha Shrine at 7:00 p.m., and a Bon dance competition with prizes is scheduled to begin around 8:40 p.m. Each time torches are swung on the shrine grounds at night, rings of fire trace layered arcs across the night sky, a scene with a power unique to this simple yet forceful fire festival, handed down in this satoyama village. It is an evening filled with people's wishes for good health and a bountiful harvest, where you can feel the community's sense of unity.

Tips

Parking near the venue is limited, so arriving early is reassuring. Sparks can fly, so avoid synthetic clothing and wear cotton garments instead. A flashlight is handy for getting around after dark.

Best time to visit

From the 7:00 p.m. departure of the torch procession. The moments right after departure, when the torch flames are swung most widely, are the highlight.
