About this spot

This hot spring inn was founded in 1868, taking its name from the 'Nakoi Onsen' that Natsume Soseki depicted in 'Kusamakura.' Soseki actually stayed at the nearby villa of Maeda Kagashi, but the hot spring water of Oda itself, a simple weak alkaline spring, is still carried on here today. A full renovation in 2018 kept the late-Edo-period beams intact, giving the building a retro-modern look reminiscent of the Meiji era. Learning the story of this land before the evening's summer festival will make the origins of the festival venue, Kusamakura Onsen Tensui, even more enjoyable.

Tips

There is parking near the entrance to the hot spring district. Sunlight is strong in summer, so a hat or parasol is reassuring for walking around. The hot spring district itself is compact, so you can take in the whole atmosphere even in a short time.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. Early afternoon, while it's still relatively cool, is easiest for walking around.
