Next stop: A memorial hall in Nishi Ward, Kumamoto City, honoring the 'Three Sages of Higo'About this spot
This former residence is said to be where Natsume Soseki actually stayed during his time at Oda Onsen, and visitors can view the building and garden that retain the atmosphere of that era. Inside, there are materials related to Soseki and exhibits introducing the connection between this land and literature; taking a break on the veranda while recalling a passage from 'Kusamakura' is one of the pleasures of the visit. Gazing at the quiet garden, you can almost sense the fatigue a Meiji-era traveler would have felt crossing the mountain pass, along with the relief of finally reaching the hot spring retreat. It's a fitting, slightly literary detour before heading to the summer festival.
Tips
Within walking distance of the Oda Onsen district. Please follow the posted rules on photography inside the building. In summer the shade of the trees is pleasant, so relaxing in the garden is also recommended.
Best time to visit
About 40 minutes. The time when soft afternoon light filters in is especially pleasant.
