Walking Trail on a Headland Overlooking the Shimabara Peninsula
About this spot
A scenic spot in Uto City where a small headland jutting into Ariake Bay has been converted into a park. A coastal promenade winds around a lush green hill, with expansive tidal flats of Ariake Bay before you and the mountain ranges of the Shimabara Peninsula stretching across the opposite shore. Atop the headland stands Sumiyoshi Shrine (住吉神社), which has watched over maritime safety for centuries. The shrine grounds, nestled in woodland, are filled with quiet and refreshing air. The park is also celebrated as a hydrangea viewing spot; in early summer the promenade bursts with colorful blooms. Located near Nabeta Kaishouro and along the coastal line toward Okoshi Kaigann, it's the perfect place to take a breather. Savor the Ariake Bay scenery slowly while feeling the ocean breeze during your headland walk.
Tips
The walking trail is a manageable loop, but as the headland has elevation changes, wear comfortable walking shoes. The coastal area has little shade, so a hat is recommended. There are no shops, so bring beverages with you.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. The morning air is crisp, and you can see the Shimabara Peninsula clearly to the horizon.
