View nationally designated historic kiln ruins and a traditional climbing kiln, and try a Kutani ware painting experience

About this spot

Built on the site where the Yoshida-ya kiln of revived Kutani ware was established in the late Edo period, this exhibition hall preserves and displays excavated kiln remains as a nationally designated historic site. The kiln remains, viewed up close within the protective structure, are impressive and evoke the story of how color-enameled porcelain and Kutani ware blossomed anew from this land. The grounds also retain one of the oldest existing climbing kilns attributed to Kutani ware, and combined with the red-tiled buildings and displayed vessels, the highlights are concentrated here. Hands-on experience menus for pottery wheel and painting allow you to create your own unique Kutani ware piece as a travel memento.

Admission is fee-based (approximately 350 yen for adults); pottery wheel and painting experiences incur additional charges and require time, so confirm reception hours in advance if you wish to participate. Located about a 15-minute walk from the central hot spring town on a gentle slope. Confirm closed days in advance. Completed works are typically sent by post at a later date.
