A base for tourist information housed in the Western-style building of Heisei Onoya, in the castle town of Echizen Ono Castle. The building is a two-story wooden structure built in 1937 as a fabric inspection site for the Ono Textile Industry Cooperative, and is a nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property that conveys the town's history of prospering through silk weaving. Inside, the Haikara Chaya (はいから茶屋) tearoom offers local flavors such as soy-sauce pork cutlet rice bowl (shoyu katsudon) and Ono's native soba. It is also close to Rokken Street, the festival venue, in a location where you can finish dinner and then head unhurriedly to the night's main event. As the sun lowers and the street lights come on, anticipation for the bon-odori dancing builds.
Tips
During the festival period, the town center can get crowded from evening onward, so it is reassuring to finish your meal in the 17:00 hour.
