Next stop: An ancient temple connected to the “Omizu-okuri” ritual that sends water to the Omizutori ceremony at Todai-ji Temple in NaraAbout this spot
This is the former site of the castle that housed the Obama Domain's government offices during the Edo period, and today it's preserved as a historic site with part of its stone walls remaining. Its location facing the sea suggests that it once served as a strategic stronghold protecting the port and castle town together. While no grand structures remain, the solidity of the stone walls and the quiet of the seaside setting quietly tell the story of Wakasa's history.
Tips
It's within walking distance of Obama Nishigumi. Footing can be uneven around the stone walls in places, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. Early afternoon, when the sea breeze is pleasant.
