Next stop: Take in the port-town atmosphere while viewing the seafood of Wakasa BayAbout this spot
This is a leading ancient temple in Wakasa, deeply connected to the Omizutori (Shunie) ceremony at Todai-ji Temple in Nara. It is known for the “Omizu-okuri” Shinto-Buddhist ritual held every March, carrying on a legendary connection spanning more than a thousand years, in which water from Wakasa is said to be sent to reach the great Buddha of Nara. The quiet, tree-shaded grounds tucked among the mountains, together with the temple's historic buildings, make it a place to reflect on the story that links Wakasa and Nara.
Tips
It's convenient to travel by car from central Obama. Admission is required to view the grounds. There are stairs on the premises, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
