Centered on Hachiman Shrine, this is the leading autumn festival of the Wakasa region, held over two days, September 19 and 20. Elaborately decorated floats, each designed by a different neighborhood, parade through town, and to the sound of drums and flutes, the whole city of Obama takes on a festive atmosphere. Fitting for Obama, which has long flourished as a port town, the float designs and parade customs passed down by parishioners carry a sense of local pride and the weight of tradition. On this first day, you can fully experience the excitement that kicks off the two-day festival.

Tips

Traffic restrictions may be in place around the venue at night, so using public transportation is recommended. The shrine grounds and streets get crowded with many people after dark, so be careful not to get separated if you're with small children.

Best time to visit

It's most impressive after 6:00 PM, when the sun sets and the floats begin to light up.
