These rice terraces spread across the mountains of Kanda Town at an elevation of 300 meters. This area once flourished as a center of Shugendo mountain asceticism, and the terraces have been preserved by the descendants of the mountain ascetics who carry on the nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, the “Matsue Rite of Tokakuji.” In 1992, they were selected as one of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' “100 Selected Beautiful Rural Landscapes of Japan.” In contrast to the bustle of the seaside, this spot offers a quiet moment wrapped in greenery, providing a pleasant rest partway through the day.
Tips
It's convenient to travel by car from Shiraishi Coast. Since the grounds are surrounded by nature, insect repellent is reassuring to bring.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. The shaded grounds are comfortable even in summer.
