Next stop: Visit the prefecture's largest Gokoku Shrine, resting quietly in the forest of Mt. ShinobuyamaAbout this spot
This shrine sits at the summit of Mt. Shinobuyama, which rises in the middle of the city of Fukushima. Mt. Shinobuyama has long been called Oyama as a mountain of faith enshrining the three deities of Haguro, Gassan, and Yudono. The precincts hold Japan's largest waraji (straw sandal), 12 meters long and weighing 2 tons, which is carried down to the city center each year during the Waraji Festival in August. From the mountain you can look down over the streets of Fukushima, making it a good spot to get a sense of the area where tonight's fireworks will be launched, in daylight.
Tips
About 15 minutes by local bus or taxi from the west exit of Fukushima Station. Parking is available. The walking path to the observation deck is paved, but in summer don't forget sun protection and hydration. There are restrooms near the summit.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes. In the morning, the view is clear and you can see all the way to distant mountains
