About this spot

This park was developed around the Miyahata Ruins (宮畑遺跡), a nationally designated historic site, and features full-scale reconstructions of pit dwellings and post-supported buildings from the late to final Jomon period. The on-site visitor center displays excavated pottery and depictions of dwellings in an easy-to-understand way, letting you imagine life at the time as you look around. The spacious lawn grounds are easy to walk on, and unusually for a ruins park, there's plenty of open space for children to run around, making it a place where you can combine learning about history with an outdoor stroll.

Tips

Since most of the exhibits are outdoors, don't forget a hat and something to drink in summer. The visitor center is air-conditioned, so it can also serve as a place to cool off and rest. Parking is free and there is plenty of space.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. It tends to be relatively uncrowded in the afternoon, making it easy to look around.
