The 2026 Fukushima Waraji Matsuri runs from Friday, August 7 to Sunday, August 9, on Shinobu-dori and Ekimae-dori along National Route 13. Originating from the giant straw sandal offered during the Akatsuki Mairi rite handed down at Haguro Shrine (羽黒神社) on Mount Shinobu (信夫山), the sandal - Japan's largest at roughly 12 meters long and about 2 tons - is carried through the streets at night by a large team of bearers. Taiko drum performances and a dance parade take place at the same time, wrapping the streets in the glow of lanterns and a lively atmosphere. It's a powerful climax, a fitting close to a day spent experiencing the history and culture of Mount Shinobu and the town.

Tips

Traffic restrictions are in place around the venue on the day of the main event, so public transportation is convenient. The streets get crowded with spectators, so it's best not to force a stroller through and to bring a baby carrier instead. Check official information for whether the event will go ahead in bad weather.

Best time to visit

From the 6:30 p.m. start, the moment the giant straw sandal passes by is the most exciting.
