About this spot

This summer festival is held across the city center of Numata, including Higashi-Kurauchi-cho, and is known for its famous Tengu Mikoshi, a portable shrine bearing a large tengu mask, carried by around 300 women alone. In 2026, it takes place over three days, from August 3 to 5, with the Tengu Mikoshi procession held on the nights of the opening day, the 3rd, and the final day, the 5th. Various performances, including the Sennin Odori dance and Numata Gion Bayashi music, fill the streets with festival excitement. As night deepens, the festival music and cheers echo through the town, creating an unforgettable summer night unique to Numata, a town that developed as a castle town on a river terrace.

Tips

Information on food stalls could not be confirmed, so it's a good idea to have dinner in advance at the shopping streets in the city center. Traffic restrictions are in effect in the city center from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. during the festival period, so be mindful of parking if driving. The streets get very crowded, so those with small children are advised to watch from a distance rather than getting too close. Event details may change in case of bad weather, so check in advance.
