Chief Shrine of Kozuke Province: The Rare "Descending Shrine" with Hall Below Stone Steps

A revered ancient shrine in Gunma Prefecture, historically the chief shrine of Kozuke Province. Famous for its rare "descending shrine" structure—after passing through the gate, stone steps lead downward to the vermillion hall below, surrounded by towering cedars creating a solemn atmosphere. The current structure was rebuilt under the Tokugawa shogun Iemitsu and designated a National Important Cultural Property for its beautiful carvings and decorations. Near Tomioka Silk Mill, it's an ideal conclusion to Tomioka's historical tour.

富岡市大島地区で、お盆に迎えた先祖の霊を送るために古くから受け継がれてきた伝統行事です。集落を見下ろす山の斜面などに一斉に火が灯され、夜の闇の中に炎の明かりが連なる光景は、大きな都市の花火とはまた違った、里山ならではの静かで荘厳な美しさがあります。地域の人々の手によって代々守られてきたこの行事は、規模は大きくないものの、地元の夏を締めくくる大切な行事として親しまれています。

屋台の出店情報は確認できていないため、夕食は道の駅上州七日市など事前に済ませておくと安心です。会場周辺は街灯が少ないため懐中電灯を持参し、足元に注意して移動しましょう。荒天時は開催内容が変更になる場合があるため、事前に富岡市の公式情報を確認してください。
Tips
About 15 minutes by car from Tomioka Silk Mill or the museum. Note the stone steps descend on entry but ascend on exit. Abundant shade makes it relatively comfortable even in summer.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes. As evening approaches, the shrine becomes cooler and more pleasant for visiting.
