Shimabara Castle (島原城)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Standing at the heart of Shimabara town, this castle features a beautiful five-story white tower. The magnificent main tower in the Azuchi-Momoyama architectural style has a distinctive appearance without decorative roof ornaments, and the sight of white walls and stone walls from the castle moat epitomizes the castle town of Shimabara. The interior of the main tower functions as a museum displaying materials related to Christianity and local history, allowing visitors to learn about the region's history, including the Shimabara Rebellion. Ascending to the observation deck on the top floor reveals a 360-degree panorama: the glittering expanse of the Ariake Sea, Mount Mayusan looming behind the town, and the checkerboard-patterned townscape of the castle town sprawling below. Before beginning your castle town stroll, viewing the entire town from this vantage point will help you understand the layout of the streets you'll walk and enhance your enjoyment even further.

Tips

The castle interior features continuous stairs, so wear comfortable walking shoes. When photographing from the castle moat, the morning light provides ideal conditions for capturing the beautiful white walls of the tower. The grounds contain several other exhibition halls, so it's recommended to allow plenty of time for your visit.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1.5 hours. A clear, sunny morning is the best time to visit, when the white walls of the tower are beautifully reflected against the blue sky.
