About this spot
Shimabara Castle, built by Shigeyuki Matsukura, is characterized by its high stone walls and a pristine white five-story tower. The interior of the tower is set up as a museum where you can view exhibits about Shimabara's history and the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion. From the top floor, you can enjoy views of the castle town's roofs and Ariake Sea, giving you a sense of the coastline location you'll visit later. The water moat surrounding the castle is thick with lotus flowers, offering a refreshingly cool summer landscape.

島原市の猛島海岸流し場・湊新地海岸流し場ほかを舞台に執り行われる「島原の精霊流し」です。2026年は8月15日(土)の18時から21時頃にかけて、その年に亡くなった故人の霊を弔うため、遺族が手作りした精霊船を曳きながら爆竹を鳴らして海岸まで練り歩きます。長崎市の精霊流しと並んで知られる島原ならではの伝統行事で、有明海に面した海岸線を精霊船が進み、灯りが波間に揺れる光景は独特の余韻を残します。このコースでは、昼間に島原の湧水と城下町を巡ったあと、夕方からその本番を迎える構成にしています。
Tips
当日は海岸周辺で混雑が予想され、駐車場が早い時間に満車になることがあります。爆竹の音が非常に大きいため、小さな子どもは驚くことがあるので、様子を見ながら距離を調整しましょう。夜の海岸は足元が暗いため、懐中電灯があると安心です。
Tips
Located within walking distance of Shimei-sou Spring Water Garden. An admission fee is required to view the interior of the tower. Summer has strong sunlight, so bring drinks and a hat for safety.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 55 minutes. The afternoon light beautifully highlights the white castle tower.
