Exploring Shikoku's Sacred Sites: Long Stone Steps and Cliff-Carved Buddhas

The 71st pilgrimage site among Shikoku's 88 Sacred Sites, where the entire mountain has long been revered as an object of faith. Cliff-carved Buddha statues are etched into sheer rock faces, and as you ascend the long stone steps, the solemn air characteristic of mountain-based worship deepens. From the temple grounds you can also overlook Mitoyo's rural landscape, and the sense of accomplishment from your exertion rewards you with a memorable view.

海に浮かぶ小さな島に鎮座する津嶋神社は、古くから「子供の守り神」として知られ、大祭の2026年8月4日・5日の両日だけ、本殿へ渡るための仮橋が架けられます。夏休みに子どもの健やかな成長を願う家族連れが県内外から大勢訪れ、境内は朝6時から夜22時まで参拝客で賑わいます。灯りに照らされた木の仮橋を渡って小島へお参りする光景は、この2日間だけの特別な体験です。
Tips
この神社は仮橋が架かる期間限定でしか本殿まで渡れません。仮橋は板張りで、夜間は特に足元に注意しましょう。大祭期間中は周辺道路が大変混雑するため、公共交通機関や臨時駐車場の利用がおすすめです。日中はもちろん、夕方以降も多くの参拝者で賑わいます。
Tips
Wear comfortable walking shoes—stone steps continue from the parking area to the main hall. In summer, some sections offer little shade, so don't forget to hydrate.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. We recommend worshipping during the cool hours from late morning through early afternoon.
