About this spot

This is the 71st temple of the 88 sacred sites of the Shikoku pilgrimage, an ancient temple where the entire mountain has long been an object of worship. Buddhist images are carved into the sheer rock walls, and as you climb the long stone stairway, the solemn atmosphere unique to mountain worship grows more intense. From the grounds, you can also look down over Mitoyo's rural scenery, a rewarding view after all that climbing.

Tips

A stone stairway continues from the parking lot to the main hall, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Some sections have little shade in summer, so don't forget to stay hydrated.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. Visiting in the cool hours from morning through early afternoon is recommended.
